Finland has officially eliminated Canada from the 2019 World Junior Championships with a stunning 2-1 overtime victory.

Canada had a 1-0 lead until just 46 seconds left when Finnish forward Eeli Tolvanen threw the puck on goal, had it bounce off teammate Hepponiemi and past Canadian goaltender Michael DiPietro.

In overtime it was Toni Utunen who ended Canada’s gold medal dreams:

Earlier today in the very first elimination game at the 2019 World Junior Championships, Team Switzerland completed a STUNNING upset over the top ranked Team Sweden.

The Swiss stormed to a two goal lead courtesy of Luca Wyss and Yannick Bruschweiler and managed to hold on in a nail biting third period to earn a 2-0 victory and send Sweden home far earlier than any fans or experts predicted. Sweden finished in top spot in the tournament’s B division winning four games in the preliminary round. By comparison Switzerland finished fourth in the tournament’s A division, earning just one win in their four preliminary round games. To say that this is an upset is a MASSIVE understatement.

The thing is… the Swiss were on the verge of earning another upset when they faced Russia this past weekend, holding two separate two goal leads before eventually folding under the pressure and dropping a 7-4 decision. Today’s victory however, erases any sore feelings the Swiss have about that Russian game.

The Swiss will now face Finland in the next round.
