The 2018-19 season is officially over, and it shows this morning with this trade.

The Washington Capitals knew some changes needed to made after failing to win back-to-back championship this spring.

The Philadelphia Flyers have been said to be looking at ways to improve the roster, ever since new GM Chuck Fletcher took over and wants to make the team a true contender again.

For that reason on Friday morning, both teams thought it would make sense to become trade partners.

The Flyers have acquired defenseman Matt Niskanen from the Capitals in exchange for defenseman Radko Gudas.

As per Cap Friendly, the Flyers retained 30 per cent of Gudas' $3.35 million cap hit on his contract - which runs through next season - in the transaction. As for Niskanen, he is signed for two more seasons at a $5.75 million cap hit. The Capitals will therefore save $3.41 million on next year's cap thanks to this trade.

29-year-old Gudas managed to score four goals and posted 20 points in 77 games with the Flyers this season while averaging 17:53 of ice time per game. He spent the past four seasons with the Flyers after beginning his career with the Tampa Bay Lightning. He had been mentioned in trade rumours several times this season, linking him notably to the Toronto Maple Leafs.

In 416 career games, Gudas has 24 goals and 105 points with 579 penalty minutes.

As for Niskanen, who also played for another rival the Pittsburgh Penguins in the past, he posted eight goals and 25 points in 80 games during the regular season, adding two assists in seven playoff games. He joined the Capitals ahead of the 2014-15 season and won the Stanley Cup with the team last year.
