Chicago went three-out-of-four signing prospects, only Dylan Sikura slipped out of their grasp.

The Blackhawks aren’t just having success on the rink, they’ve also been shoring up their future this week with a bevy of prospect signings. Rookie prospects John Hayden, Anthony Louis, and Luc Snuggerud all signed NHL entry-level contracts with the Hawks last week.

Dylan Sikura, however, decided to play one final year in the NCAA for Northeastern University.

Sikura ironclad his status as an elite prospect this season, scoring 21 goals and 36 assists, for 57 points in 38 games. The 21-year-old from Aurora, Ontario shoots left and has doubled his goal-total every year he’s been at Northeastern. Chances are there aren’t enough games for him to double up again and reach the 40 goal mark in a 40 game season…but he certainly is expected to be one of the best players in the NCAA system next year.

Sikura could potentially be a free agent in 2018, despite being drafted by Chicago 178th overall in the 6th round of the 2014 NHL Entry Draft by Chiacgo. So much young talent waiting in the wings may prove detrimental to the Blackhawk’s goal of signing Sikura.

The annual Blackhawk salary crunch always seems to clear up some room for good young players however, and sometimes even the most promising prospects don’t pan out.

Chicago has at one more season to work on bringing Sikura to Illinois, the thought of such an elite late-bloomer slipping away just isn’t acceptable for a team constantly in need of affordable, top-line talent.
