Caggiula promoted to top line

Edmonton Oilers fans weren’t alone in their disdain for their team’s performance in a 7-0 drudging by the San Jose Sharks in game. As expected, Oilers head coach Todd McLellan was less than impressed with his team’s effort and is making significant changes to his forward lines in advance of tonight’s game from Rogers Place.

Rookie winger Drake Caggiula will move up the lineup to play alongside Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. Patrick Maroon, who has occupied the position to McDavid’s left for much of the season, will move down the lineup and play alongside Mark Latestu and Zack Kassian.

The move may seem insignificant at first glance, but Caggiula gives the Oilers a little more speed on their top line and, thus far, the Oilers have had success when utilizing their speed through the middle of the ice. In other words, they’re gameplanning for a rush game, so they’re using rush forwards.

Caggiula, a 22 year-old, free-agent signing, has had an admirable rookie season with the Oilers, producing 7 goals and 18 points in 60 games. He’s still pointless in the playoffs, but by playing alongside McDavid and Draisaitl he’s bound to get his chances to break the shutout this evening.
