Tragic news around the National Hockey League.

It has been announced that former defenseman Zarley Zalapski has passed away at age 49.

Zalapski was selected in the first round, fourth overall, by the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1986. He spent four season with the Pens, with whom he won a Stanley Cup in 1991.

He then went on to play with the Hartford Whalers, Calgary Flames, Montreal Canadiens and Philadelphia Flyers. He played in 637 games in the NHL, recording 99 goals and 384 points.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.

Rest in peace Zarley.
