BREAKING: Defenseman Activated, Captain Placed on IR
Keystone Press

It appears as though this is a classic case of "good news, bad news" for the Chicago Blackhawks. Normally, the bad news precedes the good, so here goes:

Jonathan Toews has been placed on the injured reserve moments ago with a back injury. His status on the IR will be retroactive to November 24th. The Blackhawks captain has missed four games thus far since aggravating the injury he claims was already there. Evidently, he will miss tomorrow's afternoon clash with the Philadelphia Flyers.

The good news is that 25-year-old defenseman Trevor van Riemsdyk is set to return to game action tomorrow as he was activated from the injured reserve at the same time. He has not played since October 21st:

The Blackhawks currently sit atop the NHL's overall standings with 35 points and a 16-6-3 record.
