It's becoming more and more common to see draft picks who go the collegiate route refusing to sign with the National Hockey League franchises that drafted them.

The latest example of a player to do so is now 23-year-old defenseman Doyle Somerby out of Boston University, and that unfortunately means the New York Islanders are flat out of luck.

Somerby was selected by the Islanders in the 5th round(125th overall) of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, but instead of signing with the Islanders he waited until he became a free agent and has now chosen a rival team.

According to David Pagnotta of the Fourth Period, Somerby has now signed a two-year entry-level contract with the Columbus Blue Jackets, and one has to wonder if this trend will continue to grow in the coming seasons.
