According to a report from NHL insider John Shannon of Sportsnet, New Jersey Devils forward and reigning league MVP Taylor Hall has undergone surgery on his left knee. His return to the lineup is unknown.

With the Devils at the bottom of the Metropolitan Division standings a playoff push seems unlikely with or without Hall, but regardless this has to sting. Hall was so dominant for the Devils last season, putting up 39 goals and 93 points in 76 games, but he has struggled with injuries this season and it looks like he’ll put up a career worst 11 goals and 37 points this season, should the Devils decide to shut him down. Hall has been limited to just 33 games and you have to assume that he’d have his team back in the race were he able to remain healthy.

Hall and the Devils enter an important offseason as the superstar winger is slated to hit the open market as an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2020. It’s in both Hall’s and the team’s best interests for him to come back healthy and ready to carry this team once again in 2019-20 and beyond.
