Breaking: Disaster averted for Ryan Nugent-Hopkins.
Keystone Press

The Edmonton Oilers announced this afternoon that forward Ryan Nugent-Hopkins was placed on the team's injured reserve, with Iiro Pakarinen getting the call-up to replace him on Saturday against the Vancouver Canucks - the first game following the bye week.

There was some fear and speculation that it was shoulder-related, as the hit he took from Vegas Golden Knights defenseman Brayden McNabb was to that region. There was some further concern that maybe it was head-related, as it snapped back on contact.

Jim Matheson, beat reporter for the Oilers, revealed that the injury isn't as serious as previously predicted.

The sternum protects the heart and lungs primarily from injury, so it's obviously an important area to monitor and it's critical that it heals fully before resuming play.

Still - if Matheson is right, he shouldn't be out for too long.

However, as RNH has been one of the team's few standouts this year, any hope the team has of making the playoffs in the last 30 plus games has taken a hit.
