After experiencing a crushing defeat to the Anaheim Ducks last night in game 7, Edmonton Oilers star Leon Draistaitl is headed to his hometown of Cologne, Germany to join his countrymen for the IIHF World Championships.

Draisaitl was a breakout player for the Oilers this season with 29 goals and 77 points and 82 games. The big centerman was even better in the postseason with 16 points in only 13 games. With all the focus on Connor McDavid, it was Draisaitl who led the Oilers past the San Jose Sharks in the first round and willed his team to a game 7 showdown against the Ducks.

Internationally, Draisaitl has been a big part of team Germany the past three seasons. He has a combined two goals and six assists across 15 games at the World Championships in 2014 and 2016. Those numbers may not match his lofty NHL numbers, but remember that Germany isn’t exactly a hockey powerhouse. In any case, Oilers fans will be cheering on their young prodigy as he looks to continue his terrific 2016-17 campaign overseas.
