Reports are coming out today that the Anaheim Ducks have signed veteran goaltender Reto Berra to a new deal. While Berra recently signed a multi-year agreement with HC Fribourg-Gottéron of the professional Swiss league, his deal included an out-clause should an NHL club come calling. And calling they have come, apparently.

It’s an interesting move for the Ducks and until details of the deal emerge from the team, fans are left to only speculate at what it could mean for the 2017-18 season. Of course, the Ducks made a splash on the opening day of free-agency by signing 36 year-old veteran Ryan Miller to a two year deal. The assumption, before Berra’s signing, was that Miller and youngster John Gibson would split time in the Ducks crease next season, but now everything is up in the air. It’s possible that Berra was brought it for minor league depth, or to push Gibson even further, but again, until details are released all we can do is speculate.

In any case, the 30 year-old Berra joins his new club after a mostly forgettable 2016-17 season in the Florida Panther organization. In just seven games with the Panthers last season, Berra went winless and posted a 3.45 GAA and .876 Sv%. Yikes. Here’s hoping he can turn things around on the West Coast.
