According to multiple reports yesterday afternoon the Vancouver Canucks were closing in on a three year agreement with veteran defenseman Alex Edler. Most outlets published the story as a done deal, yet no deal was officially in place. Now, less than 24 hours later though, the Canucks and Elder have confirmed that they’ve come to terms on a new two year agreement worth $6 million annually.

"Alex is important to our team and has played as the cornerstone of our defence throughout his career," said Canucks GM Jim Benning in a prepared statement. "He's a leader with tremendous experience, plays important minutes and contributes to every part of our team game. We're very pleased for Alex and his family that he'll continue his career as a Vancouver Canuck."

The 33 year old Edler has spent his entire 12 year career with the Canucks and put up an impressive 10 goals and 34 points in just 56 games last season. He is the franchise’s all-time leader in both goals and points from a defenseman.

With Edler re-signing in Vancouver the upcoming free agent crop of defensemen takes a significant hit. Expect multiple teams to compete for remaining UFAs like Jake Gardiner, Tyler Myers, Marc Methot and Anton Stralman.
