Defenceman Brandon Kichton may well make his NHL debut in tonight’s game against the Anaheim Ducks, the Spruce Grove, Alberta native was called up from the AHL on an emergency basis.

The emergency is the so-far undisclosed injury that forced Dustin Byfuglien out of Thursday’s game against the Los Angeles Kings. Kichton’s emergency call-up suggests that Byfuglien won’t dress for tonight’s game.

Brandon Kichton is a 6’ defenceman with a right-handed shot, who recently signed a three-year entry-level with the Jets back in August 2013. He has 18 assists and 50 Penalty Minutes in 54 games with the Manitoba Moose this season. Despite being called up in the past (last year, also during a road trip in California), Kitchton has yet to play in his first NHL game.

Assuming Byfuglien sits out tonight, he will join seven other injured Jets starters. The blue line has been especially hard hit with Ben Chiarot, Paul Postma, Toby Enstrom, Tyler Mysers, and Jacob Trouba all scratched due to injury. Goalie Ondrej Pavelec and forward Shaw Matthias are also sidelined.

Injuries do provide opportunities for young and upcoming players to get a shot at NHL ice time, and Winnipeg has done surprising well despite the players missing from their lineup. The Jets had won three games straight before having that streak snapped by the Kings last night.
