Breaking: Finally a major development in the Johnny Gaudreau contract talks.
Keystone Press

Yesterday during an interview with Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman the agent for Calgary Flames superstar Johnny Gaudreau, Lewis Gross, made a rather shocking revelation, indicating that it had been nearly a month since his client had received contact from the Flames organization regarding their negotiations. That news became an even larger concern for fans in Calgary when he revealed the Flames had stated they would call reach out again on Septemeber 11th.

“Our last conversation with the Flames was on Sept. 9,” he said as per Friedman. “We were told we’d get a call in two days. It hasn’t happened. Next Friday will be a month.”

However that public revelation may have now prompted Calgary to get back to work on these negotiations as we have our first real update since the contracts talks began in earnest. According to TSN insider Darren Dreger there has finally been movement, and we may even be close to getting a deal done.

“Inching closer to a deal,” Dreger said as per Nichols on Hockey. “I’m not going to say that it’s imminent. The timing of this is predictable, of course. It’s less about the preseason, and more about being in the lineup for the regular season.

“This is a delicate one. It has been throughout this negotiation. I’m sure Calgary would have preferred to get him under $7 million per year on an extension – a lengthy extension. I think it’s going to be 7-plus."“But it sounds like it’s going to happen within days.”

This is good news for Calgary, as rumors of a trade being forced had already started to swirl, something that may have prompted the interview with Lewis Gross and Friedman where Gross denied those allegations.

As Dreger stated nothing is imminent, but with the season drawing close something has got to give sooner rather than later.
