Breaking: Flames have found their new goalie

The Calgary Flames have been looking to find a new backup goalie for the upcoming season and it seems like they might have just done that on Friday.

Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic revealed this morning that the Flames and pending free agent Cam Talbot are still both looking at all of their options, but there is a “decent possibility” of a deal when free agency opens next week.

Andy Strickland of Fox Sports Midwest went even further than that and stated that Talbot will be signing a one-year deal with the Flames. While players and teams aren’t supposed to exchange contract figures during the current interview period, it seems like this deal could be made official on Monday, July 1.

Talbot informed the Philadelphia Flyers that he would like to test the free agency waters to be able to land more playing time in 2019-20.

The Flames could be a nice fit for Talbot, who would be going back to Alberta. He is two years removed from being one of the best goalies in the NHL as a member of the Edmonton Oilers and could be the perfect teammate to starter David Rittich.

In another twist, Flames pending free agent goalie Mike Smith is said to have gathered interest from the Oilers. Both Alberta clubs could be simply switching things up.

To be confirmed on Monday…
