Breaking: Flyers assign Brian Elliott to AHL’s Phantoms

Surprising move? Likely to just be temporary, right?

The Philadelphia Flyers have officially assigned veteran goaltender Brian Elliott to the AHL’s Lehigh Valley Phantoms on a conditioning stint.

Elliott hasn’t played a game since November 15th, 2018 so it makes sense for him to get some reps in at the AHL level before returning to the NHL. In 14 games with the Flyers this season, Elliott posted a 6-7-0 record with a .911% save percentage.

The conditioning stint enables Elliott to remain on injured reserve while also getting in some game action. The Flyers have three games or six days (whichever occurs first) to determine their next move with Elliott.

It’s probably safe to assume thought that a lot of fans assume that, while it seems possible Elliott gets back in the NHL at some point this season, he likely isn’t a long term option for the Flyers. Here’s hoping he has some success in Lehigh Valley this week and he can get back in the show one way or another.
