And the deal is done, NCAA defensive prospect Mark Friedman is now officially a Philadelphia Flyer!

Friedman finished his season with Bowling Green State University with career highs in goals (8), assists (18) and points (26) in 40 games. He will likely be playing with the AHL Lehigh Valley Phantoms in the Flyers farm system.

The Toronto native is known for his puck moving and playmaking skills, while still being reliable in his own end. He has the potential to be a stellar two-way defenceman who can push the play offensively.

Friedman was drafted 86th overall in the third round of the 2014 NHL Entry Draft by the Flyers. At only 21-years-old it may be some time before he’s ready to contribute at the NHL level, but his signing comes at exactly the right time.

The Flyers have three defencemen to consider resigning this offseason: unrestricted free agents Michael Del Zotto and Nick Schultz, along with Shayne Gostisbehere. Gostisbehere will be looking for a raise coming off his entry-level deal, and Salary Cap constraints will likely have a lot to do with the team’s decisions on whether or not to keep Del Zotto and Schultz.

Friedman’s signing adds a player with a large amount of potential to the Flyers organization’s depth chart, and how quickly he makes his NHL debut may come quicker than expected depending on how the offseason shakes up the Flyers roster.
