Breaking: Former first round pick out for more than a month.

He may not be the most familiar name around the National Hockey League but make no mistake about it, the loss of Joel Armia to a long-term injury will be hitting the Winnipeg Jets very hard.

According to a report from NHL repoter Sami Hoffren in the early hours of the morning, the injury that was initially reported as an ankle injnury is in fact an MCL injury, and it will result in Armia being sidlelined for at least four to six weeks as a result.

Head coach Paul Maurice described Armia as one of the team's best two way players, and based on Armia's numbers the assesment from Maurice is an accurate one.

“He clearly, over the course of the summer, did the right amount of work and after about Game 2 or 3, found his game and it’s a valuable game for our team,” Maurice said as per the Winnipeg Sun. “The (Adam) Lowry-Armia combination has generated more even strength five-on-five chances and net chances than anyone else and that includes Mark (Scheifele) and Blake (Wheeler). That’s how important those two guys were. So much of that was from Joel’s stick. He’s just so responsible defensively but with a level of creativity. I’m more disappointed for him and this time but he’s going to heal and he’s going to come back and if he keeps playing the way he’s playing, he’s going to play for the Winnipeg Jets for a long time.”

The Winnipeg Jets have already been hit hard by injuries to their forward group, and this will only make matters worse. As a team with only five wins in their first thirteen games of the season, and with one of their top defenseman sitting on the sidelines demanding a trade, this couldn't come at a worse time for the Jets.
