Sad to see things end this way.

It looks like one former first round pick may be done with the National Hockey League.

According to a report from Sportsnet insider Chris Johnston, former Chicago Blackhawks' defenseman David Runblad has made the decision to sign with the Zurich Lions of the Swiss-A league following the Blackhawks' decision to buyout the remaining year of his contract this summer.

It's unclear if Runblad declined offers he received from NHL teams or if he simply did not receive any, but it looks very much like this will mark the end of his time as a National Hockey League player. Despite being drafted in 2009 Runblad only appeared in 113 NHL games with a number of teams including the Ottawa Senators, Phoenix Coyotes and the aforementioned Blackhawks, putting up 25 career points.

For him to have been selected in the first round it's likely the Blues believed he would develop into much more, and while he did hoist the Stanley Cup with the Blackhawks, for him to drop out of the league so quickly has to be a disappointment.

It's worth noting that Runblad, native of Sweden seemed to play considerably better while on loan to the Lions in Europe last season, and whether that was caused by weaker competition or just peace of mind from being closer to home, we hope that trend continues for him and wish him nothing but the best going forward.
