Breaking: Former NHL defenseman rumored to be close to becoming NHL head coach.

A former National Hockey League defenseman turned NHL assistant coach may be on the verge of the biggest opportunity of his professional coaching career.

While it's still just a rumor at this stage, NHL journalist Jimmy Murphy is now reporting that he has heard from "various NHL sources" that the Florida Panthers "definitely like" 46-year-old Bob Boughner as a candidate for their vacant head coaching positions.

Boughner, who will be best known to fans as "The Boggieman," is a veteran of 630 NHL games in which he played for a number of teams including the Buffalo Sabres, Nashville Predators, Pittsburgh Penguins, Calgary Flames, Carolina Hurricanes and Colorado Avalanche.

Following his playing career he began a coaching career as a head coach in the Ontario Hockey League and has since been named an assistant for both the Columbus Blue Jackets and San Jose Sharks. This however would be his first job as a head coach at the NHL level.
