Breaking: Former NHLer passes away far too young at 59 years old.

One of hockey's own has passed away far too young.

The Buffalo Sabres have officially announced that former National Hockey League defenseman Richie Dunn has passed away, he was only 59 years old. Dunn is most associated with the Sabres with whom he spent the majority of his NHL career, although he did also play as a member of the Calgary Flames and Hartford Whalers albeit briefly in both cases.

The first question that comes to mind when a professional athlete passes away at such a young age is what could have happened, and unfortunately we have no details to share regarding the cause of Dunn's death at this time and it seems to be a mystery even according to local news outlets.

While the news is sad for the hockey world, the loss will be most felt by the Buffalo community where Dunn continued to be a major part of charitable events and was always willing to give up his time to help those in need. As a result of his hard work in the community there has been an outpouring of condolences from every corner of Buffalo, and we've included a few of those just to demonstrate just how good of a guy Richie was even after leaving the game.

As a National Hockey League player Dunn's career spanned 483 games in which he recorded 36 goals and 140 assists for 176 career points, he also represented the United States on the international stage on two separate occasions.

Our condolences go out to his family and those in the Buffalo community who will be hit the hardest by his loss.
