Breaking: Former Stanley Cup Champion announces retirement after 1000 career games.

He hasn't played in the National Hockey League since suiting up for the Arizona Coyotes last season and on Thursday veteran National Hockey League forward Alex Tanguay officially announced his retirement from the game of hockey.

Tanguay's NHL career comes to an end with an incredible 1088 games under his belt and a very respectable offensive output over that stretch with 283 goals and 580 assists for 863 career points.

He will likely be best remembered for his time as a member of the Colorado Avalanche where he won a Stanley Cup in 2001 although he also spent time with the Tampa Bay Lightning, Montreal Canadiens, Arizona Coyotes and the Calgary Flames with whom he had the best offensive season of his career recording 81 points in 81 games during the 2006-2007 campaign.

Despite his on-ice retirement, Tanguay will still be a big part of the National Hockey League, something he revealed in an official statement today.

"I've been lucky enough to realize a childhood dream to play in the NHL for 16 years and, in looking to stay involved in hockey, I thought there was no better way than to be part of the expert panel at NHL Network," said Tanguay as per NHL.com. "I'm looking forward to sharing my passion for the game with the fans."

We wish him all the best in his future endeavors.
