In an interview with TSN 1014, the GM of the Vancouver Canucks, Jim Benning, spoke on his plans for the rebuilding of the team after the Canucks are officially eliminated from playoff contention.

They say teams are build from the goal-line out, so the first thing Benning needs to consider this offseason is what the Canucks are going to do between the pipes.

When asked about his confidence in Jacob Markstrom as a starting goalie, Benning responded, “I have a lot of confidence in him as a goalie. He’s a competitive kid, he’s got a good skillset. We were hoping that he’d get in more games this year. It didn’t happen…But if things don’t work out with Ryan (Miller) and he’s our number one goalie, I have confidence in him”.

Miller is a UFA at the end of this season, and could be temped away from Vancouver by playoff contenders looking to bolster their goaltending depth. Miller has started most the games for the Canucks this season.

Benning acknowledged that Vancouver has a lot of young defensive talent, which could open up trade opportunities to try and acquire some offence: “We’ll see what the trade market is like this summer going into the draft and stuff. If we can maybe switch out a defenceman for a good young forward, we’ll look to do that.”

Offence is a priority for Benning, who said he was “Let down on the power play” and will be looking to improve his group of forwards. He said he’s confident he will find some quality players in this year’s draft and has been busy scouting prospects.

Benning also said that Loui Eriksson is expected to return next week, while Brendon Gaunch is still out indefinitely, along with Erik Gudbranson.
