Managing a modern NHL team is extremely complex and it requires skills, experience and an overall excellent hockey sense. Some GM are better than others, but they all have to face the same type of problems.

One GM that's not attracting a lot of compliments these days is Panthers' Tom Rowe. By completing questionable trades and letting some key resources aside for no reason, he had many people scratching their heads since firing Gerard Gallant earlier this year.

A very serious situation happened a few weeks ago when star defenseman Aaron Ekblad was injured with a serious concussion. With the team pretty much certain to miss the playoffs, Rowe nonetheless had Ekblad play again as soon as possible, even if lots of specialists doubted Ekblad's actual status. After a few periods on the ice, it became clear Ekblad wasn't feeling well and Rowe put him back in the injured reserve.

In this case, disaster was averted and a key player wasn't injured again. Just imagine if Ekblad had received a second, major hit to the head too early? He would be out for LOTS of games, if not his whole career. All that for a few meaningless games at the end of a season already lost.

Today, Rowe actually apologized about his decision publicly, to everyone's surprise. You can read his statement here.

Admitting a fault is the first step to improving your work, but judgement should come before experience.
