Breaking: Habs place $23 million Dman Alzner on waivers

The Montreal Canadiens have placed defenseman Karl Alzner on waivers.

The 30 year old blueliner has played just eight games for the Habs so far this season, collecting one assist.

The former Washington Capitals defensemen joined the Habs on the opening day of free agency in the 2017 offseason, but just one season after signing a massive $23 million contract Alzner finds himself at risk of being out of the NHL entirely. At this point it’s hard to see another team taking a chance on Alzner given his $4.625 million annual cap hit.

When Alzner was signed by Habs general manager Marc Bergevin, he was supposed to be part of a revamped blue line in Montreal that featured Shea Weber and youngsters like Victor Mete and Noah Juulsen. While Weber, Mete and Juulsen have all performed admirably when in the lineup, the truth is that Alzner has never really fit in.

Here's hoping the defensive defenseman can find a fresh start elsewhere in the NHL or work his way back into the picture for the Habs by biding his time with the AHL's Laval Rocket.
