Breaking: Henrik Zetterberg's season is recognized in a great way!

In a season that almost seemed doomed from the start, Henrik Zetterberg has had an amazing season that speaks volumes about the captain of the Detroit Red Wings.

Zetterberg is Detroit’s nomination for the Bill Masterson Memorial Trophy this season reflects all he has accomplished. The trophy is awarded to the player who embodies perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to the game, terms that describe the 36-year-old Swedish forward only too well.

Before the season began, pundits and fans alike were worried about how age and the loss of Pavel Datsyuk would affect Zetterberg’s game coming off a season where he only managed 13 goals and 50 points in 82 games.

In a season where the Red Wings were half-expected to throw in the towel, their captain has done anything but.

Expected to put the offence on his shoulders this season, Zetterberg did just that and has put the doubters to rest. He has 15 goals and 45 assists for 60 points in 72 games so far this season, and has taken only 18 penalty minutes.

Zetterberg’s 14th season with the Red Wings is turning out to be one of his best, partially because he’s been largely been doing it on his own. Not to take away from his teammates, but Zetterberg has had the luxury of having some of the best line-mates in the NHL during his career.

Zetterberg seems determined to try and drag the Red Wings back into the post-season before he calls it a career. With a captain like that leading the team, it might even happen sooner than we think.

This will be Zetterberg’s first NHL season without a playoff appearance, he probably wants it to be the only one too.
