Breaking: High chance that star forward will be a free agent this summer.

The signing of Kontinental Hockey League superstar Alexander Radulov looked like a big gamble in the offseason, but it ended up paying huge dividends for the Montreal Canadiens, perhaps too huge.

The window to sign Radulov to a new contract extension opened weeks ago but the team has yet to make a deal a reality, and now many have been wondering why the deal hasn't been signed yet. A recent report from Sportsnet's Eric Engels however makes it sound like that extension isn't coming this season, and in fact may not be coming at all.

According to Engels, Habs general manager Marc Bergevin has "made it pretty clear a new contract with Alexander Radulov won't be announced before expansion draft." While Bergevin may be willing to sign Radulov once the summer rolls around, Radulov himself may have very different plans.

Engels reports that Radulov is looking for "as many yers as he can get" on his contract extensions, and at 30 years of age you can't blame him for looking for the maximum possible term. The Habs on the other hand "have incentive to stay within 2-3 years," according to Engels, something that would indicate a significant gap between the two parties.

With 15 goals and 31 assists for 46 points in 63 games this season on a team with an anemic offense, there will be no shortage of teams willing to take the risk of singing Radulov this time around, and he knows it.
