Breaking: Highly skilled defenseman confirms he is coming to the NHL, multiple teams interested.

There is about to be a big battle in the National Hockey League over one free agent defenseman.

Sportsnet hockey insider Elliotte Friedman is reporting that defenseman Neal Pionk has declared his intent to leave school and turn pro, effectively indicating that he will be joining the ranks of the NHL.

According to Friedman there "will be a lot of interest" and even that may be an understatement as 21-year-old NHL ready defensemen are a rare commodity indeed.

Pionk is coming off a huge season with the University of Minnesota-Duluth where he recorded 7 goals and 27 assists for 34 points in just 42 games. This announcement coincidentally comes on the same day that the Los Angeles Kings announced the signing of one of Pionk's teammates.
