Breaking: Huge development in the $10.25 million lawsuit against Flames’ Wideman
Keystone Press

The Calgary Flames have officially requested a dismissal in court for the $10.25 million lawsuit filed by NHL linesman Don Henderson against the team and defenseman Dennis Wideman. Henderson, you may recall, suffered injures to his head, neck, back, shoulder and knee as a result of a brutal cross-check from Wideman during a Jan, 2016 regular season game between the Flames and the Nashville Predators.

Henderson alleges that the player and the team are culpable to the tune of $10 million in future loss of income, $200,000 in general damages and $50,000 in special damages. The NHL, the team and the player maintain that the case should be resolved in arbitration, rather than in the court system. Because Henderson was employed by the NHL, they claim that he’s bound by the terms of the NHL Constitution and therefore not eligible to receive damages through the court system. Nevertheless, they’re willing to negotiate a settlement.

How the situation resolves remains to be seen. Should the judge agree with the Flames, the case will be dismissed and the parties will negotiate a settlement in private. Should the judge allow the case to move forward, the NHL, the Flames and Wideman could be on the hook for $10.25 million.
