It's all but official now.

According to a breaking news report from Dave Isaac of the Courier Post, arguably the top Flyers insider in the business, the Flyers will in fact move to fire head coach Dave Hakstol, a move that we reported on earlier this week-end. The move is expected to take place within the next 24 hours according to Issac's report and additionally it sounds like the rumored replacement in yesterday's report, former Chicago Blackhawks head coach Joel Quenneville

From Issac:

Multiple sources tell the Courier Post that the Flyers will announce the firing of Hakstol Sunday night or Monday morning.

Sources also indicated that Joel Quenneville, a three-time Stanley Cup champion with the Chicago Blackhawks, has been offered the position and accepted it. It’s unknown if he will make his debut Tuesday night when the Flyers play against the Detroit Red Wings at home or after the holiday break. If he waits, look for Lehigh Valley Phantoms coach Scott Gordon to be an interim head coach until Quenneville joins the club.

This is a blockbuster coaching change and no doubt that one fans' in Philadelphia will be absolutely thrilled about regardless of what it costs their team to bring in a coach the caliber of Quenneville. Widely regarded as the best coach in the entire league, with the possible exception being head coach Mike Babcock of the Toronto Maple Leafs, Quenneville is a multiple time Stanley Cup Champion and there will be absolutely no criticism of this move from the Flyers fan base.

This looks like a major stroke of genius from newly appointed Flyers general manager Chuck Fletcher who has immediately secured the best available coach for his team just a few short days after taking over the position. That is certainly one way to ingratiate yourself to your new fans but you also have to feel for Dave Hakstol.

For one it's not his fault that the previous general manager never provided him with a goaltender who could reliably stop the puck, and if the reports of Ron Hextall's overbearing ways are to be believed Hakstol never had full control over how the team was coached anyways. That being said I wish him all the best on his future endeavors.
