Breaking: Insider Reveals the Habs rejected a monster trade prior to the deadline.

There was talk that Montreal Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin was going all in at the trade deadline, and it appears that rival general managers attempted to take full advantage of that fact.

A hockey insider with knowledge of the inner workings of the Habs organization has informed Hockey Feed that Anaheim Ducks defenseman Cam Fowler was offered to Bergevin prior to the deadline, but Bergevin reportedly hung up the call just moments after the offer was made.

According to the source Anaheim Ducks general manager Bob Murray was prepared to give up Fowler but wanted a huge haul in return, specifically both Mikhail Sergachev as well as a first round draft pick. With Sergachev being Montreal's first round pick in 2016(9th overall) the ask was effectively two firsts for Fowler.

To be fair to the Ducks here, Fowler has been arguably their best defenseman at times this season and has done so while chewing up a very respectable 24:52 of ice time on a nightly basis. With 11 goals and 22 assists for 33 points in 69 games this season Fowler is without a doubt a proven top-4 defenseman, and it's understandable that the Ducks would want a big return.

Furthermore the Habs were looking for a lefty defenseman, and Fowler may very well have been the best available option for a team hoping to win a Stanley Cup now, something Murray would have been acutely aware of. One would think the offer would have at least tempted Bergevin, but based on how the source claims he reacted we feel safe stating that was not at all the case.
