The season has long been over for the Jets but the upper management is hard at work in order to build a competitive team for next year. Roster management is the #1 skill of a competent GM and Kevin Cheveldayoff has a lot on his plate.

Thus far, the Jets have 18M$ of free cap space to sign a starting goalie, two defenseman and at least 3 forwards. It's a bit short and a lot of creativity will be needed. This is exactly why the team signed promising defenseman Sami Niku this morning.

The three years entry-level contract is worth 916,700$ a year, which would help the roster a lot. It's not clear whether the 6', 168lbs defenseman could crack the lineup on his first year, but he's showing a lot of promise. The Jets' 198th overall in 2015 was playing in the Finnish SM-liiga these days and earned a very decent 27 points in 59 games in the last campaign.

The actual roster is heavy on the defense in terms of salary cap. Signing a good offensive guy like Niku for three years could free up some space in the years to come, as Toby Enstrom (5,75M$), Jacob Trouba (2,8M$) and Mark Stuart (2,6M$) contracts are set to expire in 2018-2019. You never have too many options is this sport!
