Breaking: Joel Quenneville officially signs a new NHL contract!

This has to be one of the biggest coups in the history of this franchise.

Yesterday rumors began to circulate suggesting that former Chicago Blackhawks head coach, and three time Stanley Cup Champion, Joel Quenneville was on the verge of signing a new deal. Initial reports suggest that the Florida Panthers had all but locked up Quenneville, however some National Hockey League insiders were reporting that as many as 3 teams remained involved in negotiations with Quenneville prior to this morning's announcement.

There is no longer any doubt and you can dispel all of the rumors, because on Monday morning Joel Quenneville officially became the head coach of a brand new National Hockey League team. According to an official announcement from the Florida Panthers organization, they have signed Quenneville to a new deal, although the terms of that deal have not been disclosed at this time. On Sunday we were hearing reports of a deal that would pay Quenneville $6 million per season, making him the second highest paid coach in the NHL behind oinly the Toronto Maple Leafs' Mike Babcock, on a multi year deal, though those are still only rumors at this time.

Here is a piece of the official press release from the Panthers this morning:

Florida Panthers President of Hockey Operations & General Manager Dale Tallon announced today that the team has named Joel Quenneville as head coach of the Panthers.

"Joel is a three-time Stanley Cup champion head coach who will be a transformative leader for the Florida Panthers franchise," said Tallon. "We've seized the opportunity to add one of the most successful head coaches in hockey history and we're thrilled that Joel has agreed to take on the challenge of leading our promising young team. I've worked with Joel previously and have seen firsthand how his passion for the game, head coaching experience and leadership can impact an organization. Joel will accelerate our growth into a club that qualifies for the playoffs consistently and competes every year toward our goal of winning the Stanley Cup."

There has been talk suggesting that the Panthers will make a hard push to sign Artemi Panarin as a free agent this summer, and picking up a coach he reportedly loved to play for in Chicago is a giant step towards enticing him to come to the Panther's organization.
