After news broke this morning that the KHL was suspending operations for one of its franchise’s, Metallurgy Novokuznetsk, fans and analysts from across the globe immediately began to call into question the league’s business practices. Well… they ain’t seen nuthin’ yet.

Sportsnet is now reporting that in addition to the contraction news, seven of the league’s 29 teams are late with player salaries for the 2016-17 season. Some players, reportedly, haven’t been paid in over six months. The total amount due is over $17.7 million.

Now, I don’t know about you, but if I were missing some of my million dollar salary, I’d be a little upset. With today’s developments finally coming to light after months of rumors concerning the KHL’s financial stability, it will be interesting to see how the world’s second biggest professional hockey league decides to move forward. One would assume that their plans to expand into Asian and Western Europe have been curtailed. But, as with most things when it comes to the KHL, nothing would surprise at this point.
