The Pittsburgh Penguins shocked the world when rumors began to surface over the week-end regarding the possibility of veteran defenseman Kris Letang being traded, but those rumors have just hit a major roadblock.

One of the big concerns for rival teams with interest in Letang was his health, he has after all been one of the most injury-prone players in the league and those concerns have just been ramped up in a major way.

According to NHL.com's Dan Rosen the Penguins have placed Letang on injured reserve retroactive to the 24th of December, indicating that he has once again suffered an injury of some significance.

This not only makes it near impossible for Penguins general manager Jim Rutherford to trade Letang while he's on injured reserve, but could also negatively impact his value moving forward.

If Rutherford can't get the value he feels a player like Letang warrants on the trade market, he may end up putting this deal on the back burner.
