The Toronto Maple Leafs wanted to make sure Brendan Shanahan was going nowhere and made an important announcement on Tuesday:

The team announced a six-year extension for its president that takes Shanahan through the 2024-25 season.

“Brendan’s positive impact on this team has not only been felt on the ice, where the team is on an impressive path, but throughout the league, with the Leafs alumni, and in the community. We look forward to continued success for the Maple Leafs under Brendan’s leadership over the next six years," said Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment chairman Larry Tanenbaum in a statement.

The 50-year-old former NHL player joined the club back in 2014.

TSN's Pierre LeBrun noted that the Leafs had been talking about a lengthy extension for their president throughout the season, but wanted to wait until the summer to make the announcement official. His previous five-year deal ended this spring.

Since Shanahan joined Toronto, the Maple Leafs have earned three consecutive playoff berths (2016-17 through to 2018-19), while recording their most points in a single season (105 in 2017-18) and consecutive 100-point seasons (2017-18 and 2018-19) for the first time in franchise history.
