The Pittsburgh Penguins had a hard time pushing pucks past New York Islanders goalie Robin Lehner on Tuesday night during the first two periods.

Then, the teams were back for the third period, and Lehner was nowhere to be found.

The Pittsburgh broadcast team then showed footage of Lehner exiting the ice for the second intermission and he was seen addressing Isles assistant coach Scott Gomez. He appeared to be telling him he was done for the night…

Thomas Greiss was in between the pipes for the third period, and Pens forward Evgeni Malkin was quick to welcome him with his sixth of the second. It cut down the Isles’ lead to 5-3.

There is no update - yet - on the condition of Lehner. We will keep you posted.

Some fans are posting hints on social media on what might have taken place. One fan posted a video of Lehner who seemed to have tweaked his back at some point in the second period.

UPDATE: Finally, it was revealed after the game that Lehner had to leave the contest due to his back tightened up. As you can see in the video above, Lehner reacted to a painful motion and was seen stretching his back. He might have chosen to be careful and step out of the game. The Islanders ended up beating the Penguins 6-3.

However, head coach Barry Trotz did not give any official update on Lehner's condition after the contest.

As for the Pens, Matt Murray started the contest but was eventually replaced by Casey DeSmith. Murray only stopped five of nine shots on him and was replaced during the second period.
