We have a very big update, one that will almost certainly lead to a trade one way or the other.

According to TSN insider Bob McKenzie the discussions between Anaheim and restricted free agent defenseman Hampus Lindholm have gained considerable steam this evening.

"I can't sit here and tell you that it's done by any stretch of the imagination but I do get the sense that discussions have certainly heated up and that if it's going to get done, it wouldn't surprise me if it happens in next 24-48 hours."

Now if you haven't followed the situation in Anaheim you may be asking why a free agent signing would lead to a trade, the answer is a simple one. If the Ducks are to sign Lindholm, they would instantly exceed their salary cap, forcing the team to move money off the books in order to become cap compliant, significat money at that.

The Ducks currently boast just $16,000 in cap space, and Lindholm is expected to sign for over $5.5 million per season, it doesn't take a mathematician to figure out those two numbers just don't add up.

McKenzie also added that these type of situations tend to come together, or explode, meaning that if a deal falls through the possibility of Lindholm himself being traded could still be a reality, albeit an unlikely one.

More to come.
