Once again, teams across the National Hockey League are coming down on final numbers of players ahead of the upcoming season, which starts in less than a week, and many players landed on the waiver wire Friday,

Amongst the list of 16 waived players, several netminders landed on there as teams have made their final decision on who will be their backup goalie for the start of the campaign.

The Edmonton Oilers placed goaltender Al Montoya on waivers for the purpose of assignment to the farm club, the Bakersfield Condors in the American Hockey League  Shane Starrett will serve as the team’s emergency netminder in Germany and Sweden.

Per Cap Friendly: "Should Montoya clear waivers, and once assigned to Bakersfield, the Oilers will receive $1.025M in cap relief, reducing Montoya's cap hit to $37,500 against Edmonton's salary cap for the duration of the loan."

The New York Rangers also made a decision on which of their netminders will serve as backup to star goalie Henrik Lundqvist. While there was heavy competition early on at the start of training camp, the Blue Shirts have decided to trust Alexandar Georgiev with the role. Marek Mazanec and Dustin Tokarski are each going on waivers today.

The Rangers also placed three others players on the waiver wire. Forwards Peter Holland and Cole Schneider, and defenseman Chris Bigras have been placed on there by New York.

The Boston Bruins also placed a goalie on waivers in Zane McIntyre, in order to reassign him to AHL Providence.  Although he has posted good numbers in the AHL the past two seasons he has yet to make an impression on the Bruins, including during this preseason where he posted a .894 save percentage in his two starts.

Other players have been placed on the waiver wire today, making for a total of 16. The Florida Panthers placed blue liner Julian Meichiori. Forward Brendan Gaunce was placed on waivers by the Vancouver Canucks.

The Anaheim Ducks went on to place two players on waivers on Friday. Centre Ben Street and centre Joseph Blandisi were informed they were placed on waivers today.

The Winnipeg Jets were one of the busiest teams today, placing four players on waivers in order to reassign them to their farm club. Nicolas Kerdiles, Seth Griffith, Cameron Schilling and Dennis Everberg all hit the wire at noon.
