Breaking: Mantha wins prestigious team award
Keystone Press

The Detroit Red Wings have announced that breakout forward Anthony Mantha has been awarded the team’s Rookie of the Year Award as determined by the Detroit Sports Broadcasters Association.

Mantha has been knocking at the NHL door for a while now, but it’s now evident that the two full seasons he spent with the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins served him well. The 6’5”, 220 lb native of Longueuil, Quebec put up 17 goals and 36 points in just 60 games for the Red Wings this season and 10 points in 10 games for the Griffins, as well.

"It means a lot to me to receive this award, and I'd like to thank the Detroit Sports Broadcasters Association for the recognition," said Mantha. "Playing in the NHL is a dream come true, and it was a thrill to play in the final season at Joe Louis Arena. I learned a lot this season, and I'm looking forward to getting started again and building off this season in 2017-18."

The 22 year-old Mantha will be a big part of the Wings moving forward. If they plan on once again competing for a playoff spot in 2017-18, they’ll need the big power forward to continue his progress.
