Breaking: Matthews undergoes surgery

The Maple Leafs may be out of the playoffs, there are many things to take care off this offseason in Toronto.

You get it, there are signings, free agents and a tight salary cap mess, however, the Leafs also have to take care of players who need important repairs this summer.

And that now includes star player Auston Matthews.

On Thursday, the Maple Leafs announced that Matthews underwent a procedure today to remove surgical hardware from a 2014 surgery.

According to the team, this is not likely to disrupt his summer on-ice program and return to action for the 2019-20 season.

TSN's Kristen Shilton believes it might be related to the surgery following a knee-on-knee collision when he was with the USNTDP U-17s.

A few days ago, Matthews announced that he would not join the American team at the upcoming World Championship, which raised some questions about his condition.

There you have it: the kid needs some repairs.
