What Sweeney will do about it?

The Boston Bruins placed veteran defenseman Adam McQuaid on the long term injured reserve, after he was injured earlier this week. McQuaid will likely miss eight weeks with a broken febula. Boston have already called up defenseman Rob O’Gara on an emergency basis, and by placing Adam McQuaid on the LTIR, they now have a salary relief of $2.75 million, which means they can exceed the salary cap by $2,654,209. By doing that, General Manager Don Sweeney will be able to call up some players to help the team during McQuaid’s absence, without having to worry about the salary cap.

McQuaid, 31, was drafted 55th overall by the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2005. The Bruins acquired him via trade in 2007, while he was still playing with the Sudbury Wolves (OHL). In 430 games, the gritty defenseman registered 63 points and 602 penalty minutes. He also added nine points in 56 playoff games.
