Breaking: Monster trade made by the Arizona Coyotes.
Keystone Press

Major deal made by the Arizona Coyotes.

Elliotte Friedman reported earlier today he was not sure of everything involved here, but he was hearing Calgary and Arizona were working on a Mike Smith deal.

Well, the deal is now done and official.

Calgary Flames are getting: Mike Smith (25% retained)

Arizona Coyotes are getting: Chad Johnson + Brandon Hickey + Cond. 3rd rd pick (2nd rd pick if Flames make playoffs)

Arizona’s general manager John Chayka’s hesitancy to move his best player, we’re not exactly talking about Carey Price or Braden Holtby here. Smith is 35 years old and carries a $5.6 million cap hit. Smith to the Flames, at this point, seems like a bit of a round peg and square hole scenario. Especially when you consider Brian Elliott provides just as stable goaltending, for likely a more affordable cap hit. Stay tuned.
