The Toronto Maple Leafs have been dealt another blow.

It looked like the day would begin with some good news for the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday with the expectation that number one goaltender Frederik Andersen could potentially make his return from a groin injury on Saturday night. The Leafs are set to face off against the Boston Bruins and the return of Andersen would have been a welcomed one given that the Bruins are also expecting a big returnto their line up this evening. That being said though it appears that the good news for the Maple Leafs has been completely shut down.

First from our earlier report:

According to a report from Toronto Maple Leafs beat reporter Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun the Maple Leafs have been leaving the door open for a big return from injured goaltender Frederik Andersen on Saturday. This news comes as a big surprise given that it had previously been reported that Andersen would not be back in action before the Leafs upcoming Monday match up against the Colorado Avalanche, however Hornby has cited comments from both Babcock and Andersen himself as reasons for his suspicious.

As you would expect head coach Mike Babcock was asked about the status of Andersen following the organization's morning skate on Saturday on to Hornby's point it was clear that the Maple Leafs bench boss was not ruling out his starting goaltender for the game against the Bruins. When pressed on the topic Babcock admitted that he would make his decision later that day, something that confirms, at the very least, that Andersen's return is a possibility this evening.

“We’ll know who is starting after 11 o’clock,” said Babcock as per the Toronto Sun.

Well we now know and the news is not good for Mike Babcock or his Toronto Maple Leafs. Andersen was held off the ice today for this morning's practice and the Leafs have now disclosed that he is dealing with yet another medical issue that will keep him out of action. According to an official report from the Leafs their starting goaltender has now contracted the flu and with it being serious enough to keep him out of practice I find it highly unlikely that he will be ready to go tonight against the Bruins.

You even have to wonder if this could impact his status for Monday's game against the Avalanche.
