NHL issues controversial fine.

The National Hockey League has just announced a major fine, the maximum allowable fine under the collective bargaining agreement in fact, and there is already considerable backlash from fans on social media.

First the fine. The National Hockey League's Department of Player Safety has issued a $5,000 fine to Minnesota Wild veteran defenseman Matt Dumba for unsportsmanlike conduct. While unsportsmanlike conduct is a very vague and generalized term, it appears that the fine was issued to Dumba for an incident in which he squirted a player with water.

The overall reaction from fans of several different teams has been to argue that this fine is far too egregious for what in the grand scale of things is a relatively minor offense from Dumba. By comparison, Chicago Blackhawks forward Patrick Kane received an identical fine today for a two-handed chop to Anaheim Ducks player Nick Ritchie, although Kane was provoked in that case.

Fans who have been vehemently against the 'wussification' of the league, for lack of a better term, are viewing this as more incident in which Player Safety has gone too far to control the product on the ice.

We want to hear from you though, so let us know what you think of this decision in the comments below.
