Breaking: New developments in the Stanley Cup Catfish Scandal
Keystone Press

Monday’s bizarre opening game to the Stanley Cup Final between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Nashville Predators featured a controversial non-goal, a 36 minute gap between shots for the home team and one dead catfish. The latter was the doing of one Preds superfan who managed to smuggle a Tennessee catfish past PPG Paints Arena security before hurling it onto the ice. Immediately following the 5-3 victory for the Penguins, media outlets were reporting that the offender had been arrested and was facing serious criminal charges.

Thankfully, cooler heads have prevailed and the charges have been dropped. "Having reviewed the affidavit involving Mr. Waddell as well as the television coverage of the incident, District Attorney Zappala has made the determination that the actions of Mr. Waddell do not rise to the level of criminal charges," spokesman Mike Manko said in a statement.

The charges against him, disrupting a meeting, disorderly conduct and possessing an instrument of a crime, could have landed Mr. Waddell in prison should he have been convicted. Thankfully, however, it appears as though he’ll be spared.
