More than 24 hours have passed since the official opening of the free agent market, and star forward Ilya Kovalchuk is still without an NHL contract for next season. While his rights still belong to the New Jersey Devils, they have been expect to sign-and-trade him for a few weeks now.

According to Brian Lawton, a former player and NHL general manager who is currently an analyst for NHL Network, the 34-year-old Russian is looking to sign a three-year, $6.5+ million deal:

Kovalchuk played 816 games in his NHL career, with the Atlanta Thrashers and the Devils. He recorded 417 goals and 399 assists for 816 points. He played 32 playoffs games, in which he scored 11 goals and 27 points.
