The sweepstakes to secure Mike Babcock's services seems to have narrowed down.
According to
Damien Cox and Elliotte Friedman in Saturday’s edition of “Headlines” on Hockey Night in Canada, only three teams remain in the running for the heavily coveted bench boss.
Those teams are the Toronto Maple Leafs, Buffalo Sabres and his current team, the Detroit Red Wings.
Both the Leafs and Sabres have requested permission to speak to the long time Red Wings coach, and both teams have filed paperwork that would allow them to sign Babcock at the cost of a compensatory draft pick.
Babcock is currently taking in the IIHF World Championship in Prague, Czech Republic. It was reported that Babcock met with the Sabres prior to arriving in Prague.
"Now it's believed that the Sabres are putting together a big pitch," Friedman noted.
Cox and Friedman note that there is still time for other teams to join in on trying to woo Babcock, but as of now there are only three teams still in the running.
Babcock is expected to inform Red Wings GM Ken Holland of his decision sometime next week.
