Breaking: NHL agent confirms his client may be leaving for the KHL.
Keystone Press

There was a rather surprising rumor earlier today suggesting that Detroit Red Wings' forward Andreas Athanasiou could be leaving for the Kontinental Hockey League, and now that rumor has gained a lot more traction.

We now have confirmation that the restricted free agent has in fact receive an offer from the KHL, and that confirmation came directly from the agent for Athanasiou, Darren Farris.

“I have received a considerable offer that is significant,” said Ferris in a text message to Craig Custance of The Athletic.

The 23-year-old center has been unable to come to terms on a new deal with general manager Ken Holland this summer, and some have even suggested that he could be the target of an offer sheet due to the Red Wings current salary cap situation, this however is another beast entirely.

Should Anthanasiou leave for the KHL the Red Wings would receive no compensation of any kind and would be left with a hole to fill up the middle, and very little salary cap space to fill it.
