Winnipeg Jets defenseman Dustin Byfuglien has been fined $2,500 for slashing Calgary Flames forward Johnny Gaudreau late in the third period of Thursday’s 4-1 loss.

Gaudreau was about to complete his hat trick when he took a two-hand slash to the arm from Byfuglien just before scoring an empty-net goal. The Flames star forward left the ice in discomfort after the slash, but said he was fine once he met with reporters after his team's win.

"You know, it's part of hockey. I mean, it won't be the last time I'm slashed," Gaudreau said after the game. "Just kind of surprised. I had a foot or two on him, so I didn't think I was going to get a stick to the arm, but I found the empty net and that's the way it goes."

On the play, Gaudreau skated past Byfuglien at Calgary's blue line, making his way towards the an empty net, however, the biggest man in the league spun around and slashed the Flames winger on the left arm. Byfuglien did receive a two-minute penalty for slashing.

Slashes and broken fingers are nothing new unfortunately for Gaudreau. The Flames forward broke a finger in 2016 after taking a stick to the hands. The NHL ramped up its calls on slashes to the hands ahead of last season.

The Flames want to avoid losing Gaudreau, who has posted 19 goals and 51 points in 38 games this season.

Byfuglien has four goals and 28 points in 31 games this season with 52 penalty minutes.
